ESE Lightning Rod -ATR 400

Working Principles: When a thundercloud forms, an electric field (atmospheric) is established between the cloud and the ground, with a strength that can reach 5 kV/m. This causes corona discharge to begin from elevated protrusions or metallic parts on the ground. When a downward leader develops within the thundercloud, the lightning strike commences. The downward leader charge propagates toward the ground in a stepped manner. The charge carried by the downward leader builds up an electric field on the ground. An upward leader is then initiated from a building or object on the ground. This upward leader propagates upward until it meets the downward leader, at which point the lightning current flows through the resulting channel. Other structures on the ground may produce several upward leaders. The first upward leader to connect with the downward leader determines the point of the lightning strike. "ATR 400" The operating principle of an Early Streamer Emission (ESE) lightning rod is to generate an upward leader that is faster than that produced by a conventional lightning rod.
